The Rhythms of Life: A Movement and Verbal Process Group Experience
The very essence of life is built upon rhythm shifts ever moving through our bodies and daily experiences that usher us through the recurring cycles of life, death and rebirth. Throughout these cycles we come face-to-face with opportunities to deepen our understanding of and relationship with ourselves, significant others in our world and the broader communal groups and tribes of which we are a part. This 10-week closed group experience offers participants a rich and embodied opportunity to be with their core material related to shifting life rhythms in relationship to self, other and group. With the support and curiosity of the group, ample time and space is provided for experimentation of new movement possibilities and choices which, invariably, translates into a new range of possibilities and choices in participants’ broader lives.
Each group begins with an arrival and verbal check-in period followed by approximately 35 minutes of movement/dance accompanied by a globally-sampled playlist that ushers participants through an experience of Gabrielle Roth’s 5 Rhythms – flow, staccato, chaos, lyrical and stillness. Throughout each movement session, I verbally provide periodic awareness suggestions and curiosities to help guide participants in their largely self-directed explorations. A 10-minute transition period allows movers space to record any thoughts and/or images from the movement via verbal or visual journaling as the shift from deeper right-brain internal space moves back towards a more left brain awareness that includes the others in the room and access to the verbal realm. The remaining hour of group is set aside for verbal tracking, sharing and group process.
As a closed group experience, participants are asked to intentionally and financially commit to the entire series, regardless of whether or not you are able to make all of the sessions. Participation in the group requires a complementary 30-minute face-to-face encounter with me to help us both ascertain fit and readiness for the group. No prior dance or structured movement experience is required for participation. This group is limited to 6 participants.
